Recently, Canada extended the interim work authorization letter’s validity for international graduates. These letters are offered to international students in the country who are awaiting a decision on their application for a work permit.

The work authorization letter was previously valid for 120 days; after the extension, it will now be valid for 180 days.

Canada Extended Interim Work Authorization Letter’s Validity: What is it?

Canada’s Interim work authorization letters are documents that allow an international graduate to begin working prior to receiving a final decision on their work permit application. IRCC generally issues it to international graduates.

The documents are given to interested international graduates who apply for a work permit before their study permit expires and meet certain requirements. While they wait for IRCC’s decision on their work permit application, they can work full-time without needing a work permit. The time period for which they can work has been extended to 180 days.

What are the eligibility conditions for an interim work letter that international graduates have to meet?

International graduates intending to work in Canada before applying for their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) must satisfy the following eligibility conditions:

  • They must possess a valid study permit when submitting their work permit application;
  • They must have finished their academic program;
  • They must satisfy eligibility conditions for working off campus without a work permit. These include the following:
  • They were a full-time student registered at a DLI;
  • They were enrolled in at least eight months long post-secondary academic vocational or professional training program;
  • They had a degree, diploma, or certificate from their academic course; and
  • They did not exceed the allowed work hours for full-time students in Canada.

Note: From November 15th, 2022, to April 30th, 2024, students could work more than the regular specified 20 hours a week limit. This was feasible because of IRCC’s temporary public policy.

Students with an interim work authorization letter can continue working in Canada even after exiting and returning to the country. However, it’s notable that most candidates will require a valid temporary resident visa for this.

Notably, an interim work authorization letter is not a travel document.

What if 180 days pass and students did not receive a decision on their application?

IRCC released a suggestion concerning international students who do not receive a decision on their application if 180 days passed. IRCC stated that they may obtain continuing proof of authorization to work in Canada from IRCC. International students can do this bu using IRCC’s webform.
