IRCC issued 1499 invitations in an Express Entry PNP-only draw. The candidates had to fulfill a score requirement of a minimum of 663 to receive an ITA. This draw occurred after two draws on May 30 and 31 and both of them were program-specific draws. Non-specific draws have begun only after the introduction of category-based draws in 2023.

The draw on May 30 acknowledged only candidates who received a provincial nomination through the PNP. Meanwhile, the draw on May 31 was for candidates under the Canadian Experience Class. On combining these draws, Express Entry candidates received a total of 5,985 invitations.

The CEC draw occurred for the first time since September 2021. In addition, most CEC candidates reside and work in Canada, aligning with Canada’s latest declaration that they would be conducting a rising number of domestic draws. These draws aimed to shift more temporary residents to permanent residents and reduce the total number of TRs in Canada. This is specifically true for the PNP draw.

IRCC issued 1499 invitations in an Express Entry PNP-only draw: A look at Express Entry

Express Entry functions as an application management system, supervising three chief economic immigration programs. These include the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the CEC, and the FSTP. Each program employs a score system through the Comprehensive Ranking System. It assigns scores to eligible candidates on the basis of work experience, age, occupation, education, and language skills. In addition, a spouse or partner will be acknowledged in the application. Each factor helps the candidate to receive a point, which completes their overall score. Candidates receive ranks against others within the pool of Express Entry, with increased scores offered to individuals receiving an ITA for Canadian PR in the upcoming draws.
Although each program has their separate eligibility conditions, they all function under the same scoring system. Further, applicants need to submit their final residence application to IRCC within a period of 60 days once they obtain an invitation.

Category-based selection draws

The category-based selection draws took effect in May 2023 as a medium for IRCC to choose Express Entry candidates. These candidates needed to have characteristics most positively aligned with the Canadian labor force and economy. Out of the six categories, five are occupation-based, targeting candidates with solid French language abilities. The occupational categories are as follows:

  • Healthcare occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • STEM occupations
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food occupations

Per the recent Access to Information Request, the highest number of category-based draws in 2024 will belong to the French language proficiency category. This accounts to at least 30 percent of the draws. Healthcare and STEM professions will account for at least 15 and 25 percent categories, while 5 percent or less will belong to the remaining categories.
