IRCC Will Grant Work Permits To Yukon Nominee Applicants
IRCC will grant work permits to Yukon nominee applicants. The Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, announced this new temporary measure, revealing that over 215 Yukon Nominee Program applicants will be given work permits.
The work permits will enable eligible foreign nationals to continue legally working in the province while their applications for permanent residence (PR) are being processed under the YNP.
Who Is Eligible?
In order to qualify for these work permits, foreign nationals should:
- Be working for a Yukon employer with legal work status
- Have applied to the YNP
- Be supported by the Government of Yukon
- Meet all the program criteria
- Demonstrate that they can expect to obtain permanent residency in 2025 or 2026
Part Of IRCC’s Broader Program
IRCC will grant work permits to Yukon nominee applicants. This temporary measure is part of a wider program. In September, IRCC declared a temporary policy of offering open work permits for some PNP applicants.
This temporary policy supports IRCC’s intentions to support provincial labor market needs and transition more temporary residents to permanent residents.
IRCC is transitioning more temporary residents to permanent residents as a tactic to support its objective of reducing the proportion of temporary residents in Canada’s overall population from 6.5% to 5% by 2027.
Before Yukon, IRCC implemented this measure with the Alberta and Manitoba Provincial Nominee Programs.
Scaling Back Of Temporary Resident Programs
On September 18 this year, Miller declared numerous changes for the scaling back of temporary resident programs. Miller stated that over the next three years, IRCC expects these changes to result in:
- 300,000 fewer study permit holders
- 175,000 fewer post-graduation work permits
- 150,000 fewer spousal work permits
Upcoming Levels Plan
IRCC will grant work permits to Yukon nominee applicants. Moreover, on November 1, IRCC will release its annual Levels Plan, which sets immigration targets for the upcoming year and provisional targets for the following two years.
The government has telegraphed that significant changes will be taking place.
This year’s Levels Plan will be the first to include targets for temporary resident levels.
