Canada’s Express Entry System

The Express Entry in Canada is an application administration system that manages candidate’s applications from three economic immigration programs, i.e., FSWP, FSTP, and CEC.

Candidates can submit their profiles to the Express Entry pool and acquire a CRS score based on different factors, such as age, education, work experience, and more.

Then, candidates are ranked against other candidates in the pool, depending on their scores. Candidates with high scores have a high chance of getting an ITA for permanent residence.

Considering urgent gaps and labor market shortages, IRCC introduced category-based selections. Under these, the department selected six categories.

These draws are different from the general draws as they do not consider the CRS score only. Category-based draws target candidates skilled in specific in-demand attributes,

The selected categories include:

  • Healthcare occupations
  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  • Trades occupations, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
  • Transport occupations
  • Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  • Strong French proficiency
